HOPE IN THE HEARTLAND:   Marketing the church

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

Can you imagine the Apostle John and the Apostle Peter sitting down at a nice café in Jerusalem for a kosher breakfast? In walks the Apostle Paul, frustration furrowed across his brow.

“What’s wrong?” John asks.

“The business cards are going to be late from the printers.” Paul plops down in a chair, still shaking his head.

Peter groans. “You think you got problems? I can’t get the web host for our church website to answer any of my emails!”

MARKETING. How did they do it back in the first century? The answer is simple, and it’s still the most effective type of promotion possible: word of mouth. There is no substitute for it — there never has been. Banners, blogs, business cards, and mass mailings are useful, but nothing is more powerful than a church member telling others about the church he or she attends.

What are you doing to “talk up” your church? You are one of the most powerful advertisements your congregation has. So get out there and spread the news.
