Marion wins 1st of season
against Sterling

Staff writer

Marion’s Friday home game against Sterling started with the Warriors giving up one of their only opening-drive touchdowns this season. However, the Warriors were in the mood to fight back and did, securing a nail-biter 22-20 victory.

Marion put the ball in the hands of senior Braedon Mercer for four consecutive plays early but he wasn’t the only one the team relied on.

The Warriors wasted no time their second possession, as quarterback Seth Lanning unleashed a deep pass that traveled 30 yards to receiver Ian Ingels, who then ran 35 yards for a touchdown. Marion took the lead on a pitch to Mercer for a two-point conversion.

The two teams traded touchdowns, but Marion increased its lead with another two-point conversion. Sterling opted for one point after its touchdown.

It wasn’t the first game where the team took shots downfield or got creative with play calling but it was the first game where those two things worked consistently. Plays like a second-quarter read-option to Will Alleven that might not have worked other times instead went for 12 yards Friday.

The Warriors ended up punting, but forced a strip-sack two possessions later to recover the ball on the Black Bears’ doorstep.

Braedon Mercer scored on a short run, and wasn’t touched until he was crossing the goal line. It may have been the offensive line’s best play all season, as Marion opened a hole so big Mercer could have rolled into the end zone.

The Warriors’ decision to go for two points earlier paid off, as it provided just enough cushion for the win. Sterling scored the only points of the second half on a touchdown, but failed to convert its two-point conversion, which led to the 22-20 final score.

Peabody-Burns wins 4th game

Peabody-Burns secured its best regular-season finish in coach Kody Tegtmeier’s tenure thanks to Friday’s 80-34 home-victory over South Haven.

The home team put up 36 points in the first half alone. Despite allowing 16 points in the first quarter and again in the second, scoring 22 points to open the game gave Peabody-Burns an advantage it was never in danger of losing.

The game almost ended at halftime, as the Warriors already were ahead 74-32 with a minute to play in the first half. If they scored again it would end the game according to eight-man football’s 45-point rule, and Peabody-Burns came close.

On the last play of the half a Peabody-Burns player had a strip-sack on S. Haven’s quarterback, only to be tackled 15 yards from the end zone as time expired.

Instead, they had to wait until the third quarter, when sophomore Gabe Holsey completed his only pass of the night for a 12-yard touchdown to a falling Ray Vantassel.

The Warriors have won four of their last five games, and their record of 4-3 is double how many victories they had last year.

Centre shut out at Wakefield

Centre was shut out Friday at Wakefield, 48-0. The Bombers scored their seventh touchdown early in the fourth quarter, ending the game by way of the 45-point rule.

Wakefield scored on two fumble returns, one kick-off return, and several long runs, overriding Centre’s attempts at defense.

Lane Methvin led Centre’s rushing with 16 carries for 70 yards, an average just under 4.4 yards a carry. He also completed four passes for 22 yards. Quinten Bina was the leading receiver.

Hillsboro, Goessel games canceled

Hillsboro’s game vs. Lyons was canceled because of “unforeseen circumstances,” according to both schools’ websites.

Goessel’s game Friday against Pretty Prairie was canceled after a positive COVID-19 test.

It was “recorded as a game not played, meaning it is not a loss or win for either team,” according to coach Garrett Hiebert. There are no plans to reschedule the game.
