Marion volleyball looked competitive and efficient at its home tournament Saturday, rolling through pool play to reach the championship game, and eventually winning the entire tournament.

After going 3-0 in pool play, including a 25-12, 25-10 two-set win over Centre, Marion found itself embroiled in a back-and-forth match against Lyons.

The Warriors proved stronger, though, and stuck out a three-set win to take the championship. They took the first set 27-25, and a 25-21 win in the third, but dropped the second set 25-22.

The Warriors’ biggest asset all day may have been versatility. Even when their setters were caught out of position, other players showed the ability to step in to set up the spike or keep the volley going.

Centre

Centre’s worst luck of the day may have been drawing Marion and Eureka in the same pool. The Cougars played a tough match against the Tornadoes, but still fell in two sets, 25-17, and 25-23.

Centre’s lone win of the tournament came against Douglass, where the Cougars were able to show how competitive they could be. They beat up on the Bulldogs, winning 25-17, 25-15.

Goessel

A pair of wins in a Tuesday tri vaulted Goessel into a tie for second place in Wheat State League play, but Thursday’s matchup at Sedgwick held darker prospects.

The competition Thursday was against a ranked Sedgwick team, which proved a daunting task. Goessel played two matches and suffered defeat in both, 25-14 25-23 and then 25-19, 25-13. The Bluebirds are 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the WSL.

Results are pending from Peabody-Burns and Hillsboro volleyball matches Tuesday. The most recent time either team played before that was Sept. 15.
