Marion to curb week-long parking

Marion’s streets aren’t parking lots.
That’s what city council members decided Monday when they unanimously passed an ordinance to make it illegal to “park, store, or leave standing” any motor vehicle on public streets, parking areas, sidewalks, parks, and other city-owned property for more than seven continuous days.
“I don’t think that’s unreasonable,” council member Zach Collett said.
He and police chief Clinton Jeffrey brought the item to the council, saying too many people clogged streets and other public property.
Violation can result in a fine not more than $80 plus court costs.
The ordinance will go into effect Oct. 26 after its official publication in next week’s newspaper.
“Complaints of the parking issues occur from time to time,” Jeffrey said. “I would say the main concern is the vegetation growth that clogs drains and prevents any cleaning of drainage gutters. It’s also an eyesore to those that live and travel through those areas.”
