Marion refunds money from lot purchase

Marion City Council voted Monday to return $17,000 paid three years ago to a pair who said they wanted to build an RV and boat storage facility.
When Ashley Unruh and Mark Evans, who formerly operated Airstream Guy in Marion, bought property at 1004 Batt St., north of Airstream Guy, the city sold it before a contract was even drawn up.
Conditions included that the buyers obtain planning commission approval to build a pole-barn type structure instead of an enclosed building.
No approval for a pole barn was granted, and the land was used instead for uncovered parking of trailers and other items.
Interim city administrator Mark McAnarney said the agreement to return the money would resolve a lawsuit between the city and the buyers.
In other matters, Lincolnville resident and county commission candidate Mike Beneke told council members that he was concerned about high tax rates in the county and its cities.
