Marion native wins Ms. Missouri title

Staff writer

Shannon Tajchman was officially named Ms. Missouri on Saturday along with winning the overall swimsuit and evening gown competitions at the regional — Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma — Ms. United States event in Overland Park.

“That was an amazing award,” Tajchman said of the overall wins. “It think that is a good sign for nationals.”

Along with the pride of winning, Tajchman also received a $30,000 scholarship to Avila University, a cruise for two to the Bahamas, $300, a photo shoot for Kansas City Magazines on May 6, a $1,500 evening gown, free pageant coaching, free health and fitness training, and her entry fee paid for the national competition July 2 through 7 in Washington, D.C.

However, Tajchman took time on Monday to shop for a box to house her crown on Monday.

“That’s not abnormal at all,” she said.

Tajchman is less concerned with pageant winnings than the ability to advance her platform — speaking out against child abuse. As Ms. Missouri, she is discussing public speaking engagements and a marketing plan with Big Brothers Big Sisters that is still in development.

She is already teaching a fitness class at the SafeHaven Advocacy Center as well as volunteering at the SafeHaven shelter. She participates in play therapy and other activities.

She said is mentoring an 8-year-old girl and that they already have a close relationship.
