Marion holds off Remington; Peabody dominates
Staff writers
Just two of five high schools in the county began their football seasons with victories Friday.
Under new head coach Jackson Schneider, Marion beat Remington 18-8 at home, and Peabody-Burns thumped Elyria Christian 54-7.
All games were pushed back by as long as an hour because of a recent heat wave.
Marion
The Warriors defended their home turf with their season-opening victory over Remington.
“Our team fought through a ton of adversity on Friday,” Schneider said. “Later kickoff time, the heat, cramps, and injuries. We came out of the game a little flat on both sides of the ball. Not really surprised with a ton of new kids getting their first varsity experience.”
Sophomore quarterback Jymer Raymer threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 61 yards on 12 carries.
While Raymer provided steadiness on offense, senior linebacker Hitch Soyez wreaked havoc on the opposite side of the ball.
Soyez finished the game with a team-high 10 tackles, including two for loss.
“Jymer Raymer handled everything really well with his first start at quarterback, and Hitch Soyez helped keep everything contained defensively with energy all night,” Schneider said.
Three different players in three different classes scored Marion’s three touchdowns.
Senior slot back Isaac Wesner, junior wide receiver Ryder Kraus, and sophomore running back Landon Hendricks all found pay dirt for Marion.
“After half we were down a few key starters from cramps and injuries, and we had a few underclassmen really step up and helped us grind away a tough Week 1 win,” Schneider said.
The team still has things to improve upon, Scheider said, but those corrections should come in due time with more practice.
“I’m proud of how we dealt with adversity and found a way to close out the game on Friday,” he said.
The Warriors (1-0) will travel to Inman (1-0) for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.
Peabody-Burns
Senior quarterback Aiden Hurst threw for 62 yards and two touchdowns as Peabody-Burns dominated Elyria Christian.
Senior running back Dalton Philpott carried the load, rushing for 84 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, Philpott, a linebacker, added six tackles and recovered a fumble.
Senior fullback Ashton Talkington totaled 53 yards on offense — 23 on the ground, 30 receiving — and scored a touchdown.
Senior tight end Jameson Miles had 28 yards receiving and scored a touchdown while making seven tackles and sacking Elyria Christian’s quarterback twice at defensive end.
“I feel like we ran the ball OK but had issues passing and running the correct routes,” coach Eric Dutton said. “This will be something we will dive hard into in the upcoming weeks.
“We played in a new defense we have not lined up in that seemed to work out well but still needs a lot of work to get it dialed in.”
Peabody-Burns (1-0) will travels to Tescott (1-0) for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.
Goessel
In Goessel’s first game this season, the Bluebirds traveled to Canton-Galva for a game that was delayed an hour because of heat.
Their first possession ended with a punt, and Canton-Galva returned it 52 yards for the first score of the game.
The Eagles threatened on their next possession, but Goessel senior Wyatt Sommerfeld intercepted a pass and sprinted 77 yards for a Bluebird score.
Senior Brayton Base recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff. Goessel marched to the 11 yard line, but Canton-Galva intercepted a pass in the end zone to kill the Bluebird drive.
Sophomore Noah Johnson recovered an Eagle fumble early in the second quarter, but Goessel failed to convert it into points.
Canton-Galva scored three times in the quarter to lead 32-6 at the break.
Senior Claudio Flores broke free on a fourth down run in the third quarter, and went 48 yards to get the Bluebirds to near the goal line, but they again were stopped by the Eagles.
Canton-Galva scored twice in the third quarter and gain on the first play of the fourth to win 52-6.
“Week 1 always brings lots of unknowns,” Bluebirds coach Garrett Hiebert said. “It was great to get out and play against someone other than ourselves.”

Hillsboro
Hillsboro football couldn’t exact its revenge from a loss to Hoisington in playoffs a season ago, losing 26-8 Friday on the road.
Hillsboro’s lone score came late in the fourth quarter when senior quarterback Zayne Haslett completed a two-yard pass to junior wide receiver Bryson Amstutz.
Haslett then connected with Amstutz again on the two-point conversion.
