Marion, Hillsboro wrestlers score multiple victories

Marion wrestling tallied its first victory of the season Friday at Marion County Duals and later followed up with a second victory.

The Warriors had their best individual performances, too, with six athletes winning at least one match. Senior Todd Palic led the way for Marion, with wins in the 195- and 220-pound divisions, as well as two wins by default.

Having its largest team in a few years paid dividends, as Marion was able to win its match over Fredonia with five wrestlers winning by default, and Trevor Schafers winning a sixth matchup with a 27-second pin.

They won a second match against Central Burden to place sixth among eight schools wrestling at Marion.

Hillsboro also wrestled well, placing fifth among eight schools wrestling at Hillsboro. The Trojans ended on a hot streak at county duals, defeating their last opponent in pool play and both opponents in the consolation bracket.

Each of Hillsboro’s athletes defeated at least one opponent, led by Garrett Helmer, who went 4-1 as a 138-pounder, and Lane Mayfield, who was 3-1 as a 132-pounder and won another match by default.
