Staff writer

Marion High School’s volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 victory Monday over Rural Vista and a 4-1 victory Tuesday over Hutchinson Trinity.

“The first match we played against them, we kind of let them come in, let the momentum switch, but we came back and took care of business,” coach Kris Burkholder said Tuesday.

The first set Monday started off in a back-and-forth battle, tied 7-7 early on. Marion started to pull ahead, 14-8, then went on a 10-point run. Game 1 ended 25-10. Rural Vista started off hot in Game 2, scoring the first two points, but Marion cancels them out early, leaving Rural Vista to call a time-out with Marion in the lead, 10-4. Marion went on to win 25-16.

In Game 3, Rural Vista got its revenge, winning 25-21, but it wasn’t easy.

Game 4 was all Marion in the beginning, leading 6-0 to start, then 9-3, 10-4, and 12-7. Marion finished 25-12, winning the match 3-1.
