Marion County was awarded a $100,000 endowment, Marion County Economic Development Director Teresa Huffman told Marion County Commission Monday.
The endowment from Kansas Health Foundation will be split in two funds. Half of the money will fund Leadership Marion County, which provides leadership classes. The other $50,000 will be used for children’s health projects, Huffman said.
Huffman will meet with Kansas Health Foundation representatives to establish guidelines for the funds’ use.
“It’s going to afford us an opportunity to do some things we’ve never done before,” she said.
In other business:
- Marion County received a $4,000 grant from UFM Community Learning Center to help fund a Cultural Arts Learning Center. The center will provide classes on a variety of topics. Many classes will be taught at Mennonite Heritage Museum in Goessel, and most teachers will be volunteers, Huffman said.
- The commission approved a bid from Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro for 5,000 gallons of diesel and 3,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline for $14,480. Cardie Oil of Tampa presented a bid of $14,639.
- A request by John Wilson, Wichita, to waive interest and penalties of $241.93 on delinquent property taxes was denied. Marion County Clerk Carol Maggard said Wilson claimed to have not received a tax bill for 2006, 2007, or 2008, but the treasurer’s office hadn’t received any notice the mail was not deliverable.
- The next commission meeting will be 9 a.m., Dec. 22.
