Lowest city taxes in county may quadruple

Durham residents can expect their city property taxes to almost quadruple in 2014.

An estimated tax rate of 28.054 mills proposed in Durham’s 2014 budget will pay for repairs to streets and the city’s sewer pond and water tower, Mayor Mike Sorensen said Monday.

The city wouldn’t be able to make those repairs without increasing its mill levy, which currently is 7.097 mills. Even at 28.054 it will be lower than most cities’ in the county.

“It’s going to take several years to do what we need to do,” Sorensen said.

The cost will be about $205 per year — $274 total, up from $69 — on a home appraised at $85,000. A public hearing on the proposed levy is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Durham Community Center.
