Lois Groening
Services for Lois Groening, 89, who with her husband operated Groening Clothiers in Hillsboro from 1959 to 1988, were this morning. She died March 13.
Born Aug. 1, 1933, in Hillsboro to David and Emma (Madsen) Weber, she grew up in Canada and was baptized in 1955 at Strassburg Baptist Church.
After graduating from Hillsboro High School, which she attended while staying with a sister at a boarding house, she worked at Vogt’s Grocery and at First National Bank before marrying Loren Groening on Aug. 26, 1955, at Strassburg church.
She later transferred to First Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school, sang in the choir, and served on various committees.
She also was a member of a singing group, JOI; was active in Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Fair; and worked at Snow Mountain YMCA Ranch near Winter Park, Colorado, and as a part-time tour director for Prudent Tours.
Husband Loren, brother Walter Weber, and sisters Francis Kreutziger, Noreen Hein, and Arlene Schroeder preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter Terri Groening of Sarasota, Florida, and son Kelly Groening of Hillsboro.
Memorials have been established with Camp Mennoscah and Hillsboro Community Foundation’s Parkside Homes fund.
Jost Funeral Home, Hillsboro, was in charge of arrangements.
