Local youth teams compete in basketball tourney

Hundreds of people came to Marion Saturday for the Marion Recreation Post-Season Tournament.

In the end, No. 1 seed Hillsboro third- and fourth-grade boys were champions and undefeated in the tournament, playing McPherson II and Newton.

Two Newton teams of third- and fourth-grade girls and fifth-grade girls were champions in their respective age groups. The third- and fourth-grade girls defeated Peabody and Marion. The fifth-grade girls team defeated Salina and then McPherson for the championship.

The Chase County team was the champion in the sixth-grade girls division, defeating Peabody, Hillsboro, and McPherson.

McPherson II defeated the Marion I team of third- and fourth-grade boys in the single-elimination tournament. The Marion II team was defeated by Newton, also in the first round. McPherson I defeated the Peabody team in that age group in the first round.

The Marion team of third- and fourth-grade girls defeated McPherson in the first game but lost to Newton in the championship round. Eventual champions, Newton, defeated the Peabody team.

McPherson defeated the Marion team of fifth-grade girls in the first round.

The sixth-grade girls Marion I team was defeated by Centre. The Marion II team was defeated by McPherson, both in the first rounds. Centre girls then played the McPherson team but lost. Peabody played No. 1 seed and eventual champion Chase County in the first round, losing the contest. The Hillsboro team played and defeated Southeast of Saline, moving on to play Chase County but losing in the second round.
