Local farmers' markets to open in two weeks

Staff writer

Spring has sprung, gardens are greening, and it’s almost time for some of that early produce to be available at area farmers’ markets.

The Marion Farm and Art Market will open for the season at 5 p.m. May 6 in Central Park.

Coordinator Kitty Laue expects early garden produce, canned goods, jellies, and baked goods to be available. Other sorts of vendors also are welcome. Vendors are not charged.

Groups are welcome to use the event as an opportunity to offer food as a fundraiser. Musical entertainment also is welcome.

“It’s a time of fellowship, and it makes the community stronger,” Laue said. “We have a beautiful setting, and that’s what draws people in.”

Florence’s first farmers’ market will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 5 at Moses Shane Park. Coordinator Scott Zogelman expects vendors to offer produce, baked and canned goods, and live plants.

The Tampa farmers’ market is a community affair. According to coordinator Carole Spohn, the first farmers’ market will be at 6 p.m. May 6 at the senior center. Spohn said the event includes a meal. The Centre Future Business Leaders of America chapter will provide the first meal.

Farmers’ markets at Hillsboro and Peabody will open Memorial Day weekend.
