LETTERS: Beware of door-to-door salesmen

To the editor:

It is important to be aware of your options before saying “yes” to something being offered to you. It’s that time of year for salesmen to come to your door to sell items. Here are some things to keep in mind when one comes to your door.

Adopt this rule of thumb, which will serve you well — never buy anything if you did not initiate the transaction. Salesmen are trained to sell and you are trained to resist. They create a need where none exists. If you really need something, you already know it.

They prey on fear and ignorance. A door-to-door salesman wants you to make an emotional decision.

So how do you resist? Don’t answer the door. Don’t let them inside your home. Don’t listen to the presentation.

Their sales pitches are constructed to get you to answer questions with a “yes.” Be courteous but firm. Tell them you are not interested at this time or you need to talk with family or friends before you make a decision.

You might be surprised of the services and products which are sold right here in our county. The good thing is that you know who they are and where they work.
