To the editor:

I have read of several county extension councils that have combined with neighboring counties. All reports have been of very satisfactory results.

This is not an effort to save money for K-State research, but to make better use of the money available and the agents’ time and talents. By combining with Dickinson County, we would have the expertise of five agents instead of two.

Marion County has an outstanding 4-H program as I witness the results at the county fair. An impressive style show is put on with clothes constructed by the members as well as purchased clothing. There are many displays on exhibit during the fair that show the talent and effort by members. I feel it could be made better with the help of additional agents.

The Master Gardener program is one that our agents just don’t have the time to devote to. This consists of a person paying for the several weeks of instruction and then volunteering several hours each year in community beautification.

The hours must be in the county in which they took the class. I believe each town in Marion County would welcome a member of Master Gardeners with open arms. I visit the display garden in McPherson several times each year.

I see many retired people donating their time. The nurseries donate many of the annual plants. It would take a dedicated person to plan and organize all of this. We have an excellent extension program. Lets continue by sharing with Dickinson County.
