Lehrman drops in 37 for Goessel

Staff writer

A career-high 37 points by Lyna Lehrman in Friday’s game highlighted a three-victory week for Goessel’s girls.

After starting last week with a 48-42 overtime loss Monday to Wichita Independent, the Bluebirds defeated Canton-Galva 28-5 Thursday and Stafford 76-40 Friday to take fifth place in a tournament at Fairfield, then beat Canton-Galva a second time, 41-17, Saturday in a Wheat State League makeup postponed from Jan. 14.

The Bluebirds are now 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the Wheat State League.

In Saturday’s game, five Bluebirds scored in the first quarter to take an 11-2 lead. Goessel’s defense allowed only three points in the second quarter, and the Bluebirds went into the break with a 16-5 lead.

Goessel had productive third quarter, leading 27-10.

Lehrman led the Bluebirds with 13 points. Braylyn Hoopes added seven.

Getting the ball close to the basket for high-percentage shots allowed Goessel to jump out to a 18-11 lead in the first quarter Friday. Goessel recorded several steals in the second quarter to charge ahead of the Trojans 39-24 at half.

Stafford did not make any adjustments on defense, and Lehrman dropped in 14 points in the third quarter. Goessel’s lead swelled to 60-31 and the Bluebirds rolled to victory.

In addition to Lehrman’s career-high 37, Hoopes scored 11.

Thursday’s contest turned out to be a game of missed baskets. Despite a lopsided victory, the Bluebirds missed 14 of 15 free-throws. But Canton-Galva scored only two field goals and one free-throw for the night. Goessel led 12-2 at half.

Lehrman led all scorers with six. Riley Graber and Emily Flaming each had four.

In Monday’s game, Goessel’s 33-25 lead after three quarters was erased in the fourth and neither team could score in the final almost two minutes of the game. Independent then scored eight consecutive points to win in overtime.

Cheyenne Sawyer led the Bluebirds with 16. Lehrman added 12.

Boys

Goessel’s boys lost 54-38 Friday to Moundridge before righting their ship and defeating Canton-Galva 59-45 Saturday.

The Bluebirds headed into Tuesday’s game against Centre with a 9-4 record, 3-1 in the Wheat State League. Goessel will be at home with Elyria Christian on Friday.

Goessel led by as many as eight points in the second quarter Friday but could not keep the Wildcats at bay. Moundridge took a 18-17 lead at halftime and then scored seven unanswered points to start the third quarter and surged to a 43-25 score at the end of three.

Skyler Wuest led Goessel in scoring with 13. Caiden Duerksen had 10.

In their makeup game Saturday, the Eagles got as close as 18-17 in the second quarter, but the Bluebirds went on an 11-3 run to take a 29-20 lead at the half.

Goessel scored six unanswered points to start the second half and led by 18 at the end of the third quarter. The Eagles closed to 48-38 in the fourth quarter, but two baskets by Jacob Schrag and free-throws from Jevin Base and Duerksen sealed the victory.

Caleb Burkholder and Duerksen led the team in scoring, each with 16.
