Lady Warriors win one of two

The Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors earned a win Feb. 9 at Canton-Galva. The team defeated the Eagles in a close match, 25-23. The PBHS squad lost to Inman Friday, 45-23.

The team has five wins this season and has three games remaining on the schedule. Next up is a trip to Hutch Trinity and then a trip to Ell-Saline. The Lady Warriors will finish the regular season with a senior night matchup at home against Berean.

Canton-Galva

Danielle Savage scored 2 early for the Lady Warriors but Canton-Galva came back with a 5-point run. Savage then gave the Lady Warriors the edge with the addition of two baskets. Traylee Woodruff got on the board with a fast break layup and added a free throw. PBHS had the advantage, 9-5, at the end of the first quarter.

The second period opened with a basket by Michaela Methvin followed by 2 points from Jessica Noble. The Eagles then added 6 unanswered points to cut the Lady Warrior edge to 2, 13-11. Noble had the last basket of the half and PBHS led 15-11.

Julie Wedel had 2 points in the third quarter and Savage had 4. Canton-Galva added a basket with 20 seconds left in the period. PBHS remained on top, 20-13.

The Eagles put in the first 2 points in the fourth quarter. Woodruff then scored a free throw and Savage had two baskets to give the Lady Warriors a 10-point lead, 25-15, with 3:32 left in the contest. The Eagles scored two treys and a free throw and the PBHS lead was cut to 3 points. Another Eagle free throw at the 2-minute mark cut the lead to just a basket, 25-23. PBHS held off several Eagle basket attempts and hung on for the win, 25-23.

Savage had 13 points in the contest. Noble and Woodruff each had 4 and Wedel and Methvin each added a basket.

Inman

Inman put in the first 2 points of the contest but a trey from Woodruff gave the Lady Warriors a 3-2 lead. Inman answered with a 2-point basket but Noble came back with a trey. PBHS led, 6-4, with 5 minutes on the clock in the first quarter. Inman tied the score at 6 but Woodruff hit one of two from the line and the PBHS squad led 7-6. Inman scored the last 5 points in the period and PBHS trailed, 11-7.

Inman added the first 7 points in the second. PBHS managed to cut into the Inman lead with 6 points — 2 from Methvin and 4 from Savage — but the Teutons led 24-23 at the half.

Inman added 14 in the third period and PBHS had 8. Savage had 4 points and Noble and Paige Lewis each had a basket. Inman had the edge, 38-21, at the end of three quarters.

Rayna Barnes had a basket for PBHS in the fourth quarter. Inman added 7. PBHS lost to the Teutons, 45-23.

Savage had 8 points in the contest. Noble added 5, Woodruff 4, and Methvin, Lewis, and Barnes 2 each.
