A one-point loss was followed by a 15 point win for the Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors basketball team. On Jan. 31, they were edged in the last seconds by Elyria Christian, 43-42. On Friday the team took a homecoming win against Solomon, 46-31. The squad’s next game will be Friday at Goessel.
Elyria 43, PBHS 42
Elyria had the first 5 points in the contest. Rayna Barnes got the PBHS squad on the board with 5 minutes on the clock in the first quarter. Elyria added two more baskets before Tori Schroeder added a basket plus a free throw. Elyria scored 5 more before the buzzer. PBHS trailed, 14-5, at the end of the first period.
The Eagles opened the second quarter with a 2. McKenzie Ensminger came up with a steal with 7 minutes left in the quarter and followed with a layup. An Elyria trey was followed by two free throws by Kaycy Gonzalez. Elyria added 4, but Brandee Burnett and Gonzalez teamed up for 4. The Lady Warriors were down 23-13 at halftime.
Elyria scored the first 4 points in the third quarter. Burnett added a 2. Four more points from Elyria were followed by a Barnes basket. The Eagles added 2. Gonzalez earned a basket, as did Sarah Hofkamp. Gonzalez added two free throws. The Eagles got the last 4 points in the period. The Lady Warriors were down, 37-23, at the end of three quarters.
The PBHS offense exploded in the fourth quarter. Burnett and Barnes teamed up for 4. Paige Lewis drained a trey from the top of the arc and added a 2. Barnes had a free throw. Elyria interrupted the Lady Warriors’ streak briefly with a free throw, but Barnes added 2 plus 1 from the line, and Burnett added a 2 to tie the game at 38. The Eagles added 3 from the line, but Hofkamp cut the margin to 1 with a turnaround jump shot. Elyria again added 2 from the line to lead 43-40 with 22 seconds left in the game. Burnett connected with 2 from the line with 18 seconds on the clock and PBHS trailed by 1, 43-42. A last shot attempt by the Lady Warriors fell short. PBHS lost to the Eagles, 43-42.

Down 12-8 early in the second quarter, Ensminger connected with a trey to make the gap 1. A Lewis put-back and earned the go-ahead points with a 2. Solomon added a free throw for the tie at 13, but Barnes scored 1 from the line to take back the lead. A Lewis steal and layup gave the Lady Warriors 2 more. The Gorillas added 1, but Hofkamp answered with 1. The Gorillas scored a 3 just before halftime, and the game was even at 17.
Lewis led with 8 in the half. Ensminger had 5. Burnett added a 2, and Hofkamp and Barnes each scored a free throw.
Solomon earned the first 2 in the third quarter. Schroeder, Burnett, Hofkamp, and Gonzalez teamed up for a string of 10 points. PBHS led, 27-19, with 3 minutes left in the period. The Gorillas got a basket late in the quarter, but Gonzalez gave the Lady Warriors the 29-21 edge at the end of three quarters.
PBHS offense proved to be on the mark in the fourth with the addition of 17 points. Lewis led with 5. Gonzalez, Burnett, Hofkamp, Ensminger, Barnes, and Jordan Gibson each scored 2 points. The Lady Warriors won, 46-31.
