Lady Warriors lose to two games

Staff writer

Peabody-Burns High School girls’ basketball team was defeated by the Centre Cougars Friday in Peabody, with a final score of 58-14.

“It wasn’t pretty,” coach Travis Schafer said Tuesday. “It was our worst game of the year.”

With two points from Riley McDowell and a free throw from Katy Benson, the Lady Warriors made three points to the Cougars 15 in the first quarter.

Although Peabody-Burns cut Cougar scoring in half in the second quarter, Benson was the only one to score from the field, bringing the game to 22-5 at halftime.

“We played good defense in the first half and we had some good shots, but not many of those shots fell,” Schafer said.

After halftime, the Lady Warriors defense broke down.

Peabody-Burns scored 9 points in the third and fourth quarters. Anna Lubbers and Benson each made two points, and McDowell scored four.

However, Centre’s Abigail Svoboda made 16 of her 21 total points in the second half, 12 of which were on 3-pointers.

“We talked about her and prepared for her in practice,” Schafer said. “We kept her at bay in the first half, but they made adjustments during halftime.”

Schafer said he could tell the Lady Warriors had “no energy” during the game. However, he still found a silver lining.

“We can only go uphill from here,” he said.
