Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors lost two basketball games on the road last week. On Tuesday, the squad lost to Burrton 26-23. On Friday, the team was defeated by Berean 38-20.
Early fouls by Peabody-Burns netted Burrton three points off free throws in the early minutes of the contest Tuesday. Midway through the first period Rayna Barnes got the Lady Warriors on the board with a free throw. Kaycy Gonzalez tied the game at three with a basket, but Burrton came back to add a basket and a 3-pointer. PBHS was down 8-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The Burrton Chargers made a basket and a free throw in the second quarter before PBHS’s Sarah Hofkamp shot two for the Lady Warriors. The Chargers scored two more, but Tori Schroeder answered back to cut the margin to three. PBHS trailed 9-12 at the half.
Burrton opened the third period with two points and Barnes scored two more for Peabody-Burns. A trey by the Chargers changed the score to 17-11, but Barnes shot two free throws to get the Lady Warriors within four, with 2:21 left in the quarter. Burrton added another basket with one minute to play but Brandee Burnett scored to put her team back within four.
Early in the fourth quarter, a Charger foul on Barnes resulted in a three-point-play for PBHS, and the score hung at 19-18. Burrton came back to add a basket and two more free throws with 4:15 on the clock.
Another Charger basket made the gap seven but McKenzie Ensminger of PBHS shot two, stole a Charger pass, and finished with another basket. The Lady Warriors were down by three 25-22 with 22 seconds remaining in the contest. Burrton made good on one of two from the line to make the gap 26-22. PBHS tried a last second shot but it fell short and they lost the game, 26-23.
Lady Warriors scoring in the game were Barnes, 8; Ensminger, 4; Hofkamp 4; Gonzalez, 2; Burnett, 2; and Schroeder, 2.
At Berean Academy on Friday, the Lady Warriors were outscored early and never recovered, losing 38-20.
Berean outscored PBHS 14-2 in the first quarter. Schroeder was the only Lady Warrior to score.
Barnes was the only PBHS player to score in the second quarter when she hit two free throws. Berean scored only once so the score stood at 15-4 at the half.
In the third quarter, Berean offense poured in 17 points while PBHS scored only three, basket and a free throw from Barnes. PBHS trailed 32-7 at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Warriors managed to put in 13 points in the fourth quarter. Ensminger got into the scoring column with a 3-point shot and a regular 2-point basket. Hofkamp added four; Schroeder and Briannaa Larsen each added two points. The final score was 38-20.
