Staff writer

The Peabody-Burns High School girls’ basketball team lost to the Solomon Gorillas, 38-33, Friday at Solomon.

Michaela Methvin opened the game with a 2 for the first points of the contest. Solomon went on a run and scored the next 7 points. With 4 minutes left in the first quarter, PBHS trailed, 7-2.

Good ball movement late in the first quarter worked to the advantage of the Lady Warriors. Methvin and Rayna Barnes each scored 2, and the Lady Warriors closed the gap to 1, 7-6, with three and a half minutes in the period.

McKenzie Ensminger scored a go-ahead basket, and Methvin added a 2. PBHS led, 10-7, with 1 minute on the clock. Tori Schroeder added a 2, but the Gorillas added two free throws. Sarah Hofkamp scored 1 from the free-throw line with just seconds on the clock. PBHS took a 13-9 edge at the end of the quarter.

Two baskets by Solomon tied the score, 13-13, early in the second quarter. The Lady Warriors took the 1-point advantage with a free throw from Methvin, but the Gorillas scored the next 7 points. Heather Brooks added 2 for PBHS but Solomon put in 5 and the Lady Warriors were behind, 25-16, at the half.

Barnes scored 2 from the line and Methvin added a 2. PBHS narrowed the gap to 5, 25-20, early in the third quarter. Solomon scored a 2 and Hofkamp added a free throw. The Gorillas maintained a 29-21 edge, but a flurry of Lady Warrior baskets — two from Tori Schroeder, one from Ensminger, and one from Methvin — tied the game at 29 with a minute and a half left in the period. Solomon, however, added a 2 late in the period and led, 31-29, at the buzzer.

Fourth quarter scoring opened with a Gorilla free throw. Methvin came up with a 2-point basket, and PBHS trailed by 1. Solomon added a 2 but Schroeder pulled up for a jumper in the lane and PBHS was within 1, 34-33, with 2:33 on the clock. Scoring opportunities for the Lady Warriors fell short in the last 2 minutes of the contest. Solomon added 4 free throws and PBHS lost, 38-33.
