Lady Warriors fall short on homecoming

The Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors basketball team suffered a close homecoming loss Friday, 29-22, against Goessel. The team also played Monday and Tuesday nights against Remington and Little River, respectively. Their next game is Friday at Moundridge.

Goessel had all the offense in the first quarter. PBHS trailed, 8-0, at the end of the period. Michaela Methvin put the Lady Warriors on the scoreboard with a free throw two minutes into the second quarter. Tori Schroeder followed with a 2-point basket and PBHS cut the Goessel lead to 5, 8-3. The Bluebirds then scored a quick 5, and the Lady Warriors were down by 10 with two minutes left in the half. PBHS offense added 4 points late in the period with two baskets by Rayna Barnes. Goessel led at the half, 13-7.

Methvin opened the third quarter with two free throws. Goessel added a basket and a free throw and Barnes responded with a 2. The Bluebirds came up with two more baskets in the period. Sarah Hofkamp added one PBHS basket and PBHS was down 7, 20-13, at the end of the third quarter.

Goessel scored two free throws early in the fourth quarter. A McKenzie Ensminger steal followed by a layup and a free throw sparked an 8-point run for the PBHS squad. Barnes had a 2 and an Ensminger trey with less than three minutes in the game got the PBHS team to within 2, 22-20. The Bluebirds came back to add a free throw and a 2. Barnes got the Lady Warriors within 3 with 1 minute 40 seconds left in the contest, but Goessel went on to score the last four free throws in the contest. PBHS lost to the Bluebirds, 29-22.
