Lady Warriors drop two basketball games

The start of the New Year was tough as the Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors girls’ basketball team suffered two losses. They were defeated Jan. 3 at Centre, 41-27, and lost a Friday match-up at home to Hope, 33-20.

Centre

An even first quarter ended with the 1-point edge going to the Cougars. Page Lewis had 3 in the period and Barnes scored 2.

Tori Schroeder had the hot hand in the second quarter and added 5. Barnes chipped in for 2. Centre added 13, and PBHS trailed, 19-12, at halftime.

Brandee Burnett had the first points in the third quarter with a 2-point basket. Centre added 4 before Sarah Hofkamp added a 2 for the PBHS squad and the score was 23-16. The Cougars added 6 more, but Hofkamp cut the margin to 11, 29-18, with one minute left in the third.

The Cougars added two baskets early in the fourth quarter. Schroeder added two free throws, and Hofkamp added a 2-point basket plus a charity shot. PBHS trailed, 34-22, with 5:21 left in the contest. The Cougars added 4 points, but PBHS answered with a free throw from Rayna Barnes and Hofkamp added a basket. Centre had the last 4 points of the competition. PBHS lost, 41-27.

Scoring

Hofkamp, 9; Schroeder, 8; Barnes, 5; Lewis, 3; Burnett, 2.

Hope

Hope led, 6-2, at end of one period of play. Barnes had the only PBHS points.

Barnes added 2 more in the second, and Hofkamp got on the board with 2. Hope added 4 from the free throw line and three baskets to take the 16-6 lead at halftime.

Scoring improved for the Lady Warriors in the third quarter with 10 points. Barnes had 6. McKenzie Ensminger and Burnett each had 2. Hope added 11. PBHS trailed, 27-16, at the end of the third quarter.

Hofkamp and Barnes each had 2 in the fourth quarter. Hope added 6. The Lady Warriors lost, 33-20.
