The PBHS Lady Warriors participated in the Marion Classic Basketball Tournament last week. In round-one action, they lost to Oxford, 31-28. Belle Plaine defeated the squad in overtime in game two, 45-43, and Bluestem also defeated the Lady Warriors, 53-18.
The team will next play Burrton and then compete against Wichita Home School.
Oxford game
Lady Warrior offense put six on the scoreboard in the first quarter, two each from Michaela Methvin, Tori Schroeder, and Traylee Woodruff. Oxford managed a slight edge in the period with nine points.
Danielle Savage got on the board in the second quarter with a basket and a free throw. Woodruff added three free throws and PBHS defense held Oxford to six. PBHS trailed by three at the half, 15-12.
Oxford outscored PBHS 11-6 in the third. Julie Wedel and Woodruff each had a basket for PBHS and Savage had two free throws.
PBHS defense held Oxford to five in the fourth quarter. A Lady Warrior offensive rally in the fourth challenged the Oxford lead. With less than two minutes left in the contest, a basket by Savage pulled the Lady Warriors to within one, 27-26. The team would get close again at 29-28 on another basket by Savage but Oxford held off the late surge by the PBHS squad.
Savage had 13 points, Woodruff 7, and Methvin, Jessica Noble, Wedel, and Schroeder had 2 each.
Belle Plaine game
Lady Warrior offense had a good first quarter with 13 points of offense. Savage led the team with four and Noble had a trey. Methvin, Wedel, and Woodruff each added a two-point basket. PBHS defense held Belle Plaine to five and led 13-5 at the end of the period.
PBHS had another productive quarter with 10 points of offense. Savage had seven and Schroeder had three. Belle Plaine added seven, but the Lady Warriors led 23-12 at the half.
Belle Plaine closed the gap with the addition of 13 points in the third quarter. PBHS managed only five — a trey from Woodruff and a basket from Savage. The Lady Warrior lead was cut to three, 28-25.
Belle Plaine scored 14 points in the fourth and led by two with just seconds on the clock. Wedel hit a 15-foot jumper to force overtime. Wedel also hit two free throws in the period. Woodruff scored five from the line and Savage had a basket.
Belle Plaine outscored PBHS, 6-4, in overtime and defeated the Lady Warriors, 45-43. Schroeder had a trey in the fifth and Savage had a free throw.
Savage had 16 points, Wedel 9, Woodruff 7, Schroeder 6, Noble 3, and Methvin 2.
Bluestem game
PBHS offense struggled in the first period against Bluestem. While Bluestem scored 11 in the quarter, the Lady Warriors managed only three — two free throws by Woodruff and a free throw from Rayna Barnes.
Bluestem offense assaulted the Lady Warrior squad in the second with the addition of 24 points. PBHS added only six — four from Savage and two from Woodruff. The Lady Warriors trailed 35-9 at the half.
Bluestem added 18 more points in the second half. PBHS added nine. The Lady Warriors lost to Bluestem, 53-18. Schroeder, Woodruff, and Savage each had three in the second half.
Savage and Woodruff each had 7 points, Schroeder 3, and Barnes 1.
