Former resident selected for education honor
Karen (Heath) Knight, retired teacher for Shawnee Mission schools, has been selected as a professional member of Biltmore Who’s Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Knight’s commitment to excellence in education.
Knight holds a bachelor’s degree from Baker University and a master’s degree in education from Webster University. She began her teaching career in the Shawnee Mission district in 1962.
She taught for 27 years in a variety of subjects including English, communications, middle school social studies and American history. Her favorite was history.
“We would travel to Washington, D. C., to see our nation’s history live,” she said. “My students made my job fun. I loved teaching them.”
In addition to her degrees, Knight also earned an additional 60 credit hours of postgraduate work studying history, and architecture and its history.
She had a passion for learning and a drive to pay it forward to her students.
Knight is a 1958 graduate of Peabody High School and is the daughter of former longtime Peabody residents, John and Myra Heath.
