Marion High School librarian and Key Club adviser Lori McLinden spoke to Marion Kiwanis about Key Club on Tuesday.

Key Club has 34 members this year. Members are required to complete 10 hours of community service during the school year to qualify for the club’s year-end activity.

One upcoming community service activity Key Club is working on is a blood drive. Volunteers will start unloading at 6 a.m. for the Nov. 11 blood drive in the middle school gym. The blood drive will continue until mid-afternoon.

If the blood drive has at least 50 donations, the school will receive a $250 scholarship to award to a student. If the blood drive has 100 donations, the scholarship amount doubles. Anyone who wants to schedule a donation can email McLinden at mclinlor@usd408.com.

Key Club also will raise money for maternal and neonatal tetanus prevention via Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Last year the club raised $163. Key Club also is involved in numerous other activities, including helping Kiwanis serve breakfast at Chingawassa Days and lunch at Old Settlers’ Day.

McLinden also sponsors SAFE Team, which has events to encourage students to wear seatbelts. Earlier this year they did a survey through covert observation and found about 87 percent of students wore seatbelts.
