Jail question on November ballot

Staff writer

Marion County Commission reviewed the question Monday that will be on the Nov. 4 ballot regarding a bond issue for a new county jail.

The question will read in part: “Should the county implement a one-cent sales tax to finance a bond up to $8.9 million?” If the bond issue passes then a feasibility study will be conducted to ensure that sufficient funds will be raised through the county sales tax increase to pay the bonds.

Bond counselor David Artebury of George K. Baum Company of Kansas City will be on the county commission agenda Friday to discuss the bond issue and election question.

According to state statute, the proposed one percent sales tax can only be used for the construction of the building. When the bonds are paid, the sales tax will end.
