It's that peppernut time of the year again

Staff writer

Peabody Senior Center members will begin baking peppernuts this week to sell during the holiday season. Thursday is the first day of the annual event at the center.

Some volunteers will prepare dough and others will push it through a plunger apparatus, which squeezes peppernut cookies out small holes on the sides and onto cookie sheets.

Groups at card tables sort cookies into rows on baking sheets and another group of helpers keeps an eye on the baking process.

At the kitchen sink, two or three others keep used utensils washed and dried so baking does not slow down.

Senior center members will bake peppernuts each Monday and Thursday afternoon through the middle of November.

“We can always use extra volunteers for this project,” site manager Ruth Lott said. “We start as soon as the kitchen is cleaned after lunch and work for an hour or two each day.”

Lott said peppernuts sales raise enough money to pay a good portion the center’s annual expenses.

“We appreciate help from anyone who is able to give us a couple of hours, whether it is just once or every week,” she said.

More information is available from Lott at (620) 983-2226.
