HOPE IN THE HEARTLAND:   Is Thanksgiving for the dogs?

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

H.A. Ironside was sitting in a crowded restaurant. A man approached his table and asked, “May I sit here?” Ironside smiled and invited him to sit.

When Ironside’s food arrived, he bowed his head and returned thanks for the meal. He opened his eyes and noticed that the man was staring at him.

“Are you feeling okay? Do you have a headache?” the man asked.

“I’m feeling fine. I was just thanking God for the food.”

“Oh, I don’t believe in all that religious stuff. When my food gets here, I’ll just start eating.”

“I see,” said Ironside. “My dog does the same thing.”

As you gathered around the Thanksgiving table, did you return thanks to God or just act like an animal? One of the things that makes humans unique in the created order is our potential for expressing gratitude and worship to God. I hope you took this Thanksgiving to do so.
