Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke has issued a statement about the ongoing investigation into the distribution of small denomination counterfeit bills in Peabody.
“We have a suspect,” he said. “The individual has not been formally charged, but we expect charges to be filed by Marion County Attorney’s office.”
Burke said his department contacted the Wichita field office of the U.S. Secret Service after the bills were discovered. The Secret Service is in charge of investigations involving counterfeit money.
“I talked to the agent in charge in Wichita and he said to proceed with the process we had started. That is what we have done,” he said. “County Attorney (Susan) Robson has the information we gathered, she has the reports, and she will file charges against the individual in question.”
Burke was out of town at a training conference when the bad bills were discovered. Peabody Police Officer Travis Davis took the reports and filed the case with the county attorney.
