Verna Grosse

A celebration of life for Verna J. (Britton) Grosse, 62, who went to be with her Lord and Savior on Jan. 21, 2023, will be 10 a.m. May 27, 2023, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Florence.

A meal for her family and friends will follow. Meal plans will be announced at graveside.

Born Aug. 30, 1960, to Leroy E. Britton and Dwaila D. (Penn) in Hillsboro, Verna was married June 24, 1978, to Steven P. Swope and gained a son, Nathan. Together they had two daughters, Catrina and Nicole.

Verna later married Robert (Bob) D. Grosse on Nov. 26, 1994. With this marriage, she gained a daughter, Dawn.

Verna’s four children and seven grandchildren meant everything to her.

As a child, Verna was placed in foster care with the Terrones family. She took all of the family as her own, even when she went back home to her father.

As a teenager, Leroy married Judy, who eventually became one of Verna’s best supporters and friends.

Verna loved to cook. She made her living cooking in restaurants and loved to cook for her family and friends, too.

Verna loved karaoke, bingo, and casinos, where she made many friends. Verna never met a stranger and was quick to lend a helping hand where needed.

Her survivors include her children, Catrina Zielinski and fiancé David of Burns, Nicole Krueger and husband William of Burden, and Dawn Setzer of Peabody; seven grandchildren, Haylee, Cera, Jackilynn, Lucas, Leroy, Lylliegh, and Wyllow; siblings John, Donald, Michael, Shannon, Randy, Leah, Jason, and Ina; loving “bonus mom” and dear friend Judy Carroll of Marion; her mother, Dwaila Weldon of Jones, Oklahoma; her aunts, uncles, and tons of cousins; and “adopted” family.

Verna was preceded in death by her father, Leroy; stepson Nathan; maternal and paternal grandparents; and many aunts, uncles and other loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations for her grandchildren’s college funds. Donations may be sent to PO Box 13, Burden KS 67019.
