Mary Ann Smithhart

Mary Ann Smithhart, 75, Marion, who passed away Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, at Newton Medical Center, will be laid to rest at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newton.

Her family will gather with friends to share stories 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion.

Mary Ann’s life began Sunday, June 9, 1946, in Saugus, Massachusetts. Her parents were Arthur B. and Frances (Gerty) Holmes.

Her family moved to Kansas when she was young. It was here that she met and married Billy Smithhart on Aug. 25, 1963, in Newton.

Mary Ann worked for several area businesses, including Marion Manor, and as an egg processor in Newton.

Her favorite job was the 18-plus years she made donuts at Carlsons’ Grocery in Marion.

She loved visiting family and she was the family caregiver. Mary Ann took care of both her parents at the ends of their lives.

Her loving family includes her husband, Billy, of Marion; children Mary Frances Pankratz of Salina and Charles (and wife Lori’Ann) Smithhart of Hillsboro; sibling Tommy (and wife Chris) Holmes of Wichita; and nephews and niece Sharon Mitchell, Stephen Smith, and Frank Smith.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Ellen Smith and brother Jimmy Holmes.

Mary Ann’s one wish for us all is that we all get vaccinated. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to Newton Medical Center Health Foundation for use in the critical care unit.
