Dorothy Scharenberg

Dorothy Lillian (Lewis) Scharenberg was born Aug. 24, 1922 to Morgan L. and Mary (Warlen) Lewis.

Dorothy lived with her parents and twin sister, Doris (Lewis) Louis on a farm east of Marion, Kansas, in the Youngtown community.

Dorothy and Doris attended country grade school for eight years. Their daddy died when they were 10 years old during the Great Depression. They left their home when they were 14 to live with and work for numerous families in Lincolnville so that they could attend high school there. Dorothy spent summers living with and working for others in Burdick, EI Dorado, and Hutchinson to earn money to return to high school. Dorothy played snare drum in the high school band. She and Doris graduated in the class of 1940.

A spark with high school classmate Leo Scharenberg of Marion turned into a flame after graduation. Leo was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. Leo and Dorothy were married Jan. 11, 1943. They spent one week together before Leo was sent overseas for World War II.

Dorothy and her mother went to Chicago, Illinois, where Dorothy got a job with Utah Radio Products Co. testing radio resistors, then transferred to a department where she timed bomb releasers.

Dorothy attended Billy Graham Youth for Christ Crusades every Saturday night in Chicago, and was selected to take offering every week.

When Leo returned home after nearly three years, they moved to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he was honorably discharged in 1945.

They returned to Marion and began the business of farming and raising four children.

In 1953, they moved to Cedar Point, where they operated a dairy business along with farming. Dorothy loved to garden, often canning 300 quarts of fruits and vegetables in addition to filling the freezer. She enjoyed sewing and made many of her children’s clothes as well as her own.

On Jan. 7, 1967, cousins Richard and Danny Heim came to live with Dorothy and Leo for nearly five years until they were grown. They loved and cared for them as their own children.

In the early 1970s, Dorothy and Leo entered into a partnership with their daughter and son-in-law in farming and ranching. This provided them with opportunity to travel the United States.

Dorothy and Leo were active members of Youngtown EUB and Florence Christian Church. They also attended Cedar Point Methodist Church. Dorothy taught Bible classes, and also taught Bible study for the Cedar Point ladies’ community Bible class. She was a lifelong member of Ladies Auxiliary VFW.

They resided in the Flint Hills for 51 years. Dorothy and Leo moved to a house in Hillsboro, Kansas, in 2004, and then to Parkside Homes in 2008.

Dorothy lost her beloved Leo on Nov. 26, 2011, after nearly 69 years of marriage. Dorothy loved the ones who cared for her at Parkside, and many of them dearly loved her as well.

Dorothy was a Christian bestowed with much wisdom. She had a profound faith in God which sustained her throughout her life. She was a patriot, kept up on current events, and was politically motivated. She always exercised her right to vote. She educated herself and studied extensively, reading many books. She enjoyed learning how to use her iPad at age 90 so she could see and talk with her family every day. Dorothy had a deep love for her family and prayed for them every day.

Dorothy departed for her home in Heaven on Jan. 14, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; son, Leon; great-grandson, Isaac Scharenberg; parents, Morgan L. Lewis and Mary Lewis-Flanery; stepdad, Morris Flanery; twin sister, Doris, and husband, Laurence Louis; stepbrothers, Jack Flanery and Bob Flanery; stepsister, Ruby Flanery-Cole; brothers and sisters-in-Iaw, June and Lois Jost; Herb and Fern Jost; and Orville and MaryAnna Scharenberg.
