David Smith

A celebration of life for David Smith, 78, who passed away Sunday, April 17, 2022, at his home in Marion, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Strassburg Baptist Church, rural Marion.

David was born June 5, 1943, in Wichita to his parents, Richard and Ernestine (Kuhns) Smith. He graduated in 1961 from Goddard High School and went on to attend both Friends University and Kansas State University, eventually becoming part of the first class from Kanas State University to earn a degree in restaurant and institutional management.

David was united in marriage Dec. 30, 1967, in Studley, Kansas, to Effie Breeden.

David managed food service for hospitals in several states, including Illinois, Iowa, and Colorado. Along the way, his career also included farming, truck driving, and even owning his own restaurant, Dave’s Restaurant, in Larned.

When David wasn’t hard at work, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and singing. He was part of a barber shop quartet and sang with other students from Friends University while he was in college.

David also was a strong member of the Strassburg Baptist Church family.

David is survived by his wife, Effie Smith, of Marion; children Richard Smith (and wife Echo) of Marion, Kristen Jackson (and husband Ron) of St. George, and Amber Johnson (and husband Aaron) of Dodge City; grandchildren Brandon Smith, Charlotte Smith, Jeremy Smith, David Smith, Jacob Smith, De Smith, DJ Smith, Gabriel Johnson, Drew Johnson, and Luke Johnson; great-grandchild Mason Stith; brother Ronald Smith (and wife Betty) of Monetta, Virginia; sister Diane Cummings of Oklahoma City; and many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ernestine Smith.

Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Yazel–Megli Funeral Home, Marion.

Memorial contributions in David’s name may be directed to Strassburg Baptist Church or to Good Shephard Hospice in care of the funeral home.
