Gracepoint Church, Peabody
Can you imagine a soldier sauntering up to his commanding officer and saying, “Sir, now that we’re approaching the summer season, I was wondering if it would be okay for me to have the summer off?”
You can imagine the look of stunned disapproval that would be vividly displayed on the C.O.’s face. He’d probably shake his head slowly as he loaded a selection of choice words into his verbal cannon.
The soldier, seeing the bulging veins in his commander’s neck, might seek to temper the increasingly uncomfortable moment by hastening to add, “But … but if it’s a big problem, I could probably be here one week a month.” He’d snicker nervously, take a few steps backward, and wait for the response.
So what do you think the commander would say? Not the exact words necessarily, but do you really think the commander would approve the idea?
I wonder what would happen to each church’s summer attendance if each member remembered that we are not part of a social club but are, instead, enlisted in the service of the Lord. How would it affect your church attendance this coming summer?
