Hope in the Heartland

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

Atheism is too simple.

There are people who believe there is no God because of the evil things that happen in the world every day. But the charge is awkward and the thinking flawed. How can there be such a thing as “wrong” unless there is also such a thing as “right”? Where did the concept of right and wrong come from?

You must have a perfect standard before you can say that a certain action is wrong. Something has to be pure before it can be impure. Something that is wrong, evil, or sinful is only a perversion of something else that is right, pure, and good. And we humans could never have established those categories, because we are sinners.

Evil happens. Bad things — impure and unfair things — will take place, and there will not always be a convenient answer as to why. But the existence of evil doesn’t prove the non-existence of God. Frankly, evil wouldn’t matter if there wasn’t a God.

But it does matter. And a perfect and just God will settle it all someday. And after the Day of Judgment, there will be no atheists. They will have undeniably met God.
