Hope in the Heartland

Pastor, Gracepoint church

Christian writer Penelope Stokes told about a Peanuts comic strip where Snoopy was chasing his dream of being an author. Here’s the way she recounted it:

“Edith wouldn’t marry Ralph because he was too fat,” the first frame said. In the next frame, the Great Canine Author continues: “Ralph tried, but he couldn’t stop eating, so Edith broke up with him.” Third frame: “It was a shame Ralph couldn’t have his cake and Edith, too.”

The final frame of the strip showed Snoopy doing his victory dance on the roof, thinking, “It’s a wonderful feeling when you know you’ve written something really good.”

I laughed as I pictured Snoopy tapping on the keys of his old typewriter and then dancing on the top of his doghouse. I even smiled at Ralph’s dilemma.

Then I realized that like poor old Ralph, we all have to make choices, Ralph had to choose between cake and Edith, but those of us who live on the real world side of the comic strips have heavier decisions to wrestle. Our lives are packed full of them.

The wonderful truth is that God has written something “really good” called the Bible so we could make the most important choices in our lives. It’s the choice of whether or not to accept forgiveness through the cross of Christ or wander into eternity unprepared.

I can’t promise that there will be cake in heaven, but I can promise that if you accept Christ, you’ll be there.
