Peabody City Clerk Stephanie Ax reminds city residents that Waste Connections will operate on a delayed trash pickup schedule for both the Christmas and New Year weeks.
With both holidays falling on Thursday this year, regular Friday pickups will instead be on the Saturday after Christmas for trash only, and the Saturday after New Year’s Day for both trash and recycling.
“People might want to mark their calendars early to help them remember,” Ax said. “With the holidays and the extra amount of food and packaging in most households, it might be inconvenient to forget and have to carry over all that waste.”
Carts pulled into the street and then backed against the curbs can be lifted by Waste Connection trucks with an arm from a position close to the center of Peabody’s streets. Carts left on the lawn can lead to damaged streets.
“The trucks are so heavy that they break down the asphalt and concrete along the edges and cause unnecessary damage to the streets,” she said. “When people leave their carts on the edge of their lawn instead of in the gutter area of the street, the trucks have to move onto that edge, which then wears down and breaks off easily.”
Trash carts should be moved back onto the residents’ property after the trash is collected, not left in the street from one trash pickup to the next.
