Staff writer

Water, trash, and recycling rates for Hillsboro residents will go up in January. The changes will show up on February bills.

City council members unanimously approved raising fees for water service to $34 a month for minimum plus $6.71 per 1,000 gallons for up to 7,000. Rates would go up to $6.85 per 1,000 gallons for 7,001 to 15,000 gallons; $6.98 for 15,001 to 30,000 gallons; and $7.12 for 30,001 or more gallons.

Rates for commercial and multiple dwellings will have a $36 per month minimum charge.

The city also will charge $50 for new service; $25 for shut-off notices; $50 for a first reconnection; $200 for a second reconnection; and $300 for a third or subsequent reconnection.

Residential trash service will be $16.75 for one poly cart in the city or $18.25 for a cart outside.

Recycling services will be $5 for one recycling cart inside city limits or $5.35 for outside city limits.

In other business, a contest will choose a new name for Bluejay Lanes, which the city has taken over.

“If two or more people come up with the same name, how are we going to do that?” council member Ronald Wilkins asked.

City administrator Matt Stiles said he hadn’t really thought of that and would give it consideration.

Wilkins suggested adding a date to paper ballots. Mayor Lou Thurston said he liked that idea.

Council members approved renewal of cereal malt beverages for Casey’s General Store, Ampride, Dollar General, Pizza Hut, Pueblo Viejo, and the city golf course.
