Hillsboro to expand street work, offer dilapidated house for sale

Staff writer

Hillsboro City Council members decided Tuesday to get extra street work done while contractors will be in the county working on highways and roads.

Darin Neufeld of EBH Engineering talked about Wilson and Lincoln Sts. south of D St. and ongoing work on Adams St., which will get priority.

“Our goal is to get A St. and a parking lot for Tabor College finished before the 2024-2025 school year begins,” Neufeld said.

Neufeld said several contractors were aware of the project and are interested in it.

The council voted to contract with EBH for engineering and supervision.

A dilapidated house once under consideration for demolition and then donated to city land bank will be offered for sale.

Property inspector Doug Dick reported in September that the house was unsafe. The owner didn’t want to improve it and donated it instead.

Four people have expressed interest in the property, Stiles said. He expects it will be converted to rental property.

“We want to require that they bring the property up to code,” he said.

Council members voted to accept bids and require quarterly updates on rehabilitation.

Council members also approved a $5,923 utility lien for unpaid electric, water, and sewer bills incurred by Herington Hospital’s Hillsboro Clinic.

Stiles said he doubted the lien would result in any payment.
