Hillsboro sweeps Lyons during a doubleheader

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School baseball team outscored visiting Lyons 27-2 during a double header on Monday.

The games were originally scheduled for Friday, but were pushed back due to weather. That was fine with Hillsboro, who won game one 12-2 and game two 15-0.

Hillsboro trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning, and it was the only time the Trojans would trail all game. Hillsboro responded with a run in the first, followed by two in the second.

Hillsboro would score at least one run in every inning, including three in the fifth and four in the sixth to force a mercy rule.

Brooks Gardner swung a hot bat with a team-leading three hits and four RBIs. Phillip Young was dominate on the mound, throwing a complete game with five strikeouts.

Game two would only need three innings before a mercy rule was called, due to a 10-run second inning. The Trojans scored one in the first and four in the third to make it a 15-0 victory.

Alex Caldwell recorded two hits and two RBIs in three innings, and Landon Roberts gave up one hit and struck out two in his three innings of scoreless pitching.

Hillsboro will host Haven on May 9.
