Hillsboro’s Hein places 2nd at Cardinal Classic
Staff writer
Hillsboro and Marion wrestlers traveled Friday to the Hoisington Cardinal Classic.
Hillsboro
Aaron Hein placed second in his weight class after a 4-1 run, losing by decision against Ryan Sramek of Atwood-Rawlins County in the final match.
Anthony Fickes, Emery Dalke, Lucas Sorensen, and Jackson Kleiber placed fourth in their respected classes.
Khloe Willis-Dirks and Aimee Kelley placed third. Clair Morey and Brooklyn Wilson placed fourth.
“Probably the highlights of this week were the performances of freshman Khloe Willis-Dirks for the girls and sophomore Aaron Hein for the boys,” coach Scott O’Hare said. “We plan to get in a solid four days of practice this week before the varsity boys and girls teams will compete this coming Friday and Saturday in the 27-team, two-day Circle Invitational.”
The invitational starts at 1 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.
Marion
The Warriors only took two wrestlers to the Cardinal Classic because they were playing host to a junior varsity tournament in Marion the next day.
Brian Nguyen started the day 2-0 before withdrawing without explanation. His start still got him fourth place.
Kellen Waner finished 3-2 and also earned a fourth-place finish.
“Kellen showed really good growth throughout the night and looked as good as he has all season,” coach Tyler McMichael said. “We are excited for him to continue that trend heading into the final few weeks of our season.”
The Warriors will travel Friday to Onaga. Only one more meet is left after that before regionals.
