Hillsboro, Goessel girls win

Staff writer

Marion County girls basketball teams netted mixed results early in the season, but Thursday and Friday games might have shown they were rounding a corner.

With Marion girls out of action because of COVID-19 quarantine, Hillsboro and Goessel both captured victory away from home.

Hillsboro took a 52-42 victory over Southeast of Saline Thursday and a 45-26 win over Hutchinson Trinity Friday.

Hillsboro girls team still proved to be a second half scoring one Thursday.

The Trojans tallied nine points in the first quarter, again in the second, and 10 in the third, but exploded for 24 in the fourth quarter alone.

Hillsboro was able to distribute the ball well, with eight of the team’s 10 players scoring, including 13 points by Jessica Saunders and 11 by Teegan Werth.

Goessel enters break with a W

With no seniors available to Goessel girls on Friday, the underclassmen showed their toughness in a 46-37 victory at Udall.

The Bluebirds led 12-7 after one quarter and then went on an 8-1 run to propel them to a 24-17 halftime lead.

Udall pulled within three points, but Goessel sophomore Hailey Lowrance hit 11 consecutive points in the third quarter to take the 37-30 lead.

The Bluebirds build the lead slightly to a final score of 46-37.

They were led by Lowrance’s 15 points, as seven players scored and four tallied at least five points.

All teams will be on break until the first week of January.
