Hillsboro approves purchases, ordinances

Hillsboro city council approved several purchases and ordinance changes at their meeting Tuesday.
The city of Hillsboro is in the process of assessing equipment needs. Dale Dalke presented requests for a new backhoe and a hydro-vac trailer.
Dalke also asked about getting a trailer to store and transport hand tools used for concrete.

“We’re not talking about extra stuff; this is stuff that these guys use every day,” mayor Lou Thurston said. “We’re doing more projects all the time, and more projects are going to continue to come up, so I don’t see this as anything superfluous or extra. I’m not looking to throw money around willy-nilly, but I want to make sure we have the right stuff.”
City administrator Matt Stiles suggested reevaluating the fee for attaching utilities to poles.
It has cost $1 per pole to attach utilities since 1980. Fees could go toward maintenance and repair of the poles.
Marion charges $2.50 per pole and McPherson charges $15.
Council members will consider raising the fee to $10 at their March 15 meeting.
Starting March 15, council meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Municipal court was moved to the first Tuesday of the month.
