Hillsboro approves $1 an hour raise

Hillsboro city employees will receive a cost-of-living adjustment of $1 per hour, an average 4% raise projected to cost $58,000.
City council members unanimously approved the adjustment — to be included on paychecks starting Jan. 12 — Tuesday.
The city gave a cost-of-living adjustment of 2% at the beginning of the year. However, inflation increased to 6.2%, and the Consumer Price Index has risen another 7.1% this year, city administrator Matt Stiles told council members.
Projecting that inflation will continue to rise, the 2023 budget includes a 2% performance-based bonus for mid-year if the city’s coffers allow, Stiles said.
The cost-of-living increase will apply to all full-time employees and permanent part-time employees with a few exceptions. A few employees recently changed jobs and received a cost-of-living bump early because of the change. They won’t receive an additional increase.
“This is already factored into the budget,” Stiles said. “We talked about it back in June.”
The $58,000 cost was calculated on base salaries and historical overtime rates.
