High-scoring Goessel boys advance

Goessel’s boys thrilled a home crowd with their highest point production of the season as the Bluebirds defeated Burrton, 72-43, in a first-round Class 1A Division I sub-state game Thursday.
Three Bluebirds scoring in double digits helped Goessel build a 17-point lead in the second quarter.
Burrton closed the gap to 31-23 at halftime, but Goessel opened the third quarter with a 17-2 run and took control.
Scoring by starters Caiden Duerksen and Skyler Wuest and reserve Jevin Base propelled the Bluebirds to a 29-point victory.
Duerksen led Bluebird scorers with 16. Wuest had 14, and Base, 11.
Second-seeded Goessel, 14-5, will play third-seeded Little River for the third time this season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Burrton.
Goessel lost both of the earlier games in close contests, 53-48 a week ago and 39-38 early in December.
