Heavy rains flood parts of Marion County

Heavy rain Saturday night and Sunday morning flooded parts of Marion County and forced evacuation of some residents in Peabody. More than 5 inches was reported throughout the county.

A water rescue was conducted at a house in southern Peabody Sunday morning, and another seven houses were evacuated.

The National Weather Service in Wichita issued a flood warning for Marion and Harvey counties. The Cottonwood River near Florence was measured at 24.9 feet at 1 p.m. Sunday and was forecast to rise to 26 feet. Flood stage is 22 feet. The flood warning remained in effect Monday afternoon, when the river was measured at 25.4 feet.

Many county roads were closed because of flooding, Road and Bridge Superintendent Jim Herzet said Monday.

There were no reports of injury accidents caused by flooding or vehicles being swept off roads, Sheriff Rob Craft said.

Flooding forced the closure of 42 campsites at Marion Reservoir, Park Ranger Kyle Manwaring said.
