Harvey County issues burn ban

Harvey County Commissioners issued a burn ban at their Monday meeting, effective through Monday.

Noting the hot dry weather and forecasted high winds through the coming week, commissioners said the weather conditions created a fire hazard for the cropland and grasslands of Harvey County.

The ban prohibits the careless use of smoking materials and building or using an open fire or campfire except in permanent fireplaces or barbecue grills in developed recreation sites or residential areas.

Prescribed burning of fence rows, fields, wild lands, trash, and debris also is prohibited unless such burning is necessary for crop survival and has been specifically approved in writing by the fire chief in the jurisdiction where the burn will take place.

The commissioners will review the ban at the next meeting Monday. For more information, contact Nadine Rees at Harvey County Emergency Management, (316) 284-6910.
