Hillsboro and Goessel volleyball both finished third and Centre fourth during the final meets of the season Saturday.

Hillsboro, Marion

The Trojans kicked off their morning Saturday with wins over Haven and Halstead 25-7, 25-16 and 25-13, 25-7 to advance against Augusta.

The Trojans bested the Orioles in three sets 25-18, 21-26, and 25-18 placing them first in their pool, coach Sandy Arnold said.

Hillsboro faltered against tournament champions Rock Creek, losing 21-25, 25-21, 25-23.

“With the loss we had to face Augusta once again in the consolation game,” Arnold said. “It was a long day, but the girls held on for the win.”

The Trojans are ranked second in their league after besting Augusta a second time to net third place.

Marion volleyball lost its final home game this past Thursday 26-24 and 25-23 against Lebo after defeating Peabody-Burns 25-8 and 25-9. The Warriors are sixth in their league.

Marion and Hillsboro will play in substate tournaments Saturday at Hillsboro High against Cottonwood Falls-Chase County, Elbing-Berean Academy, Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School, Inman, Moundridge, Sedgwick, and Sterling.

The Kansas High School Activities Association expects to announce tournament brackets today.

Other teams

After defeating Wakefield and losing to Herington on Thursday, the Cougars were seeded third in Saturday’s volleyball league meet at Centre.

Goessel was seeded fourth, but the Bluebirds proved to be the better team. They defeated Centre in two games, 25-22 and 25-21, to claim third place.

Goessel also had the distinction of winning one game each against top placers Herington and Little River, forcing those matches into three games. No other three-game matches were played.

Centre finished the day with two wins and three losses. The Cougars defeated Wakefield and Elyria Christian and lost to Herington, Little River, and Goessel.

Peabody Burns defeated Canton-Galva 25-23, 25-14, Saturday but lost to Solomon 25-8, and 25-3 at a tournament in Hope.

Centre and Peabody-Burns will play in a substate tournament Saturday at Centre. Other teams will be Rural Vista, Wakefield, and Elyria Christian.
